The Royal Burgh of Irvine, located on the coast of the Firth of Clyde, was one of the West of Scotland’s major seaports before the dredging of the Clyde. In centuries gone by, it was the largest burgh in Ayrshire. Irvine's burgh status ended in 1975 with local government reorganisation, but still boasts the largest settlement in Ayrshire.
Today, Irvine hosts part of the Scottish Maritime Museum, the Headquarters of North Ayrshire Council. The town was once a haunt of Robert Burns, who was believed to have worked in a flax mill on the Glasgow Vennel here in the late 1780’s, and after whom two streets in the town are named: Burns Street and Burns Crescent. The town enjoys a vibrant community spirit including and active Burns Club, two Rotary Clubs and Trades Guilds. There are also conflicting rumours that Mary, Queen of Scots, was briefly involved in the town's history. Some say she stayed briefly at Seagate Castle. To this day there is still an annual festival, called Marymass, held in the town.
Irvine town centre is currently being transformed by the Irvine Bay Regeneration Company, creating better business accommodation and attempting to reconnect communities with the sea. Transport links are one of Irvine Bay's greatest attributes, with historic investment providing a comprehensive road infrastructure. An unparalleled train service means that each of the five towns of Irvine, Kilwinning, Stevenston, Saltcoats and Ardrossan has regular direct services to Glasgow city centre and Glasgow Prestwick International Airport. The airport can also be reached within 20 minutes by road. Ardrossan is the main ferry point for travel to Arran and some 700,000 people travel through the town every year. The project provides the opportunity for people to live in a beautiful area of Scotland and benefit from the regeneration that is gradually transforming the area.
